National Road Museum

The National Road Museum introduces the road and its importance, the vehicles which have traveled the byway over the past two centuries, the technology which earned it recognition as a “Civil Engineering Landmark,” the people and towns which built and traveled the corridor, and the experiences and landmarks found along the National Road in its heyday and into today.

A part of the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area, the Museum is just minutes from the South Mountain Battlefield and Antietam National Battlefield in Sharpsburg. The exhibits include the importance of good roads, and especially the National Road, to armies during that conflict. Other exhibits recognize the historical inequities which once existed along the road.

Within the National Road Museum can also be found the Visitor Center for the Boonsboro area. 
With its 19th century row of preserved Main Street structures, Boonsboro is home to Nora Roberts’ Inn Boonsboro, Turn the Page Bookstore and various other quaint shops and restaurants. Shafer Park just behind the museums offers picnic and play areas for guests and hosts many quality events.
